NPS Student Participates in VA Innovation Demo Day
By MC2 Michael Ehrlich
NPS student Lt. Todd Coursey had an idea, that desktop manufacturing devices like 3D printers and laser cutters could be utilized to assist transitioning veterans. Recognizing the merit of his initiative, the Veterans Administration (VA) selected Coursey’s idea for presentation at the latest VA Innovation Demo Day, August 8, where teams across the nation offered forward-leaning solutions to improve services for U.S. veterans.
“3D printing can not only be used as a form of art therapy, and advancing the variety of rehabilitation services offered to our vveterans, but, in the process of creating and printing, veterans acquire design and manufacturing knowledge that can assist in future employment,” Coursey explains.
The NPS physics student says he believes 3D printing has untapped potential, especially for veterans, both as a means of therapy and as a unique skill set.
“The vision we have is eventually transitioning therapy into skill development, certification and meaningful employment,” Coursey explains. “Desktop manufacturing in a therapy setting is truly about allowing patients to become a part of the process. It allows for a unique approach to translating imagination into physical forms, all while allowing space for introduction of current technologies.”
Events like the VA Innovation Demo Day provide opportunities for service members to share ideas that they have matured over several iterations, Coursey says, for the betterment of transitioning veterans. The element of service, he says, is an important part of his obligation to the Navy.
“Service sometimes goes beyond one’s obligation to the contract they signed,” Coursey said. “Through the experiences we are afforded, and networking available at NPS, we gain a deeper understanding of people and processes, which in turn enable us to be stronger and more well-rounded leaders to our fellow service men and women ... That ability to reach beyond the books and into the practical is invaluable, and something that sets NPS apart.”
