NPS Property Management Develops System to Repurpose Excess Property

By MC2 Patrick Dionne

NPS Property Manager Ron Helmrick and Erik Kanstrup show off a portion of the items currently available on the Property Management department’s excess property reuse SharePoint site. The new resource archives and lists a variety of office supplies, furniture, electronics and other items that can be claimed by NPS personnel for official use at no cost.

“The equipment we have includes cables, computers, monitors, toner cartridges, printers and so on, and all is available for viewing,” said Helmrick. “For example, if you are looking for a new computer, all you would have to do is go to the SharePoint site and request it and it’s as easy of that.”

The site is currently available to any NPS personnel with access to resources on the campus Intranet. The site can be found on the Acquisition Portal under the Support and Help tab. Once there, the complete reuse database can be viewed on the property page along with step by step instructions on ordering new goods.

“Last year, we were able to save more than $100,000 which was all redistributed back to campus,” said Helmrick. “Many of the departments on campus have the budget for a new computer with a life cycle of three years and will then turn in their old ones. If they are a good viable asset we add it to the system, where people can request it at zero cost.

“So far, we have had five people try out the system and they were all able to navigate the site with ease,” Helmrick continued. “With just those five alone we have already saved $2,000, and we estimate that we will save a total of $200,000 this year.”

There are currently more than 300 items listed in the database, all originating from campus. The items can be sorted both alphabetically and by category, and once an item is selected can be delivered to either Spanagel 031, Building 284 or can be picked up from the warehouse, building 349, directly.
