Naval War College Monterey Graduates Latest Cohort

The 72nd graduating class of the Naval War College (NWC) Monterey program for Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) at NPS stands for a group portrait on the front steps of Herrmann Hall, Sept. 14. Through the program’s partnership with NPS, 4,751 officers have earned JPME Phase I certification since its inception in September of 1999.

Professor Fred Drake, Chairman of NWC Monterey, presided over the ceremony where a total of 41 U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army officers earned their Command and Staff diploma.

“What you’ve learned, including the logic behind why solutions did or didn’t work, is something that you, your unit, your service, and even your national security team, can benefit from,” said Drake. “You’ve passed a major milestone, but you haven’t finished your journey. There will be other milestones, some planned, some unplanned and other chances to excel that will present themselves.”

Program graduate U.S. Army Maj. Marc Peterman also spoke highly of the program.

“Personally, what I think about the Naval War College is that they are on the right track because it teaches us that there’s always improvements that can be made,” said Peterman. “There’s a lot of information that it gives you, that you can use to self-educate yourself and further your career.”

The NWC mission is to develop future leaders through education by building strategic and cultural perspective, and enhancing the capability to advise senior leaders and policymakers.

“Your journey will not be easy,” added Drake. “There will be challenges ahead but with what we’ve seen so far, you will all meet and conquer those challenges with the vigor and energy and innovation that you’ve seen within your class. Good luck with your future endeavors.”
