CRUSER Hosts Annual Review of University Research in Robotics, Unmanned Systems

By MC1 Lewis Hunsaker

Dr. Ray Buettner, Director of the Consortium for Robotics and Unmanned Systems Education and Research (CRUSER), welcomes students, faculty, staff and guests to its annual Technical Continuum (TechCon) 2017 in Ingersoll Hall, April 11. CRUSER's yearly open forum seeks to broaden the awareness of NPS student, faculty research in robotics and unmanned systems both on campus and beyond.

"The Navy has put a large investment here at NPS, and is relying on us to help integrate unmanned systems, planning this element into the U.S. Navy at large," said Dean of Research Dr. Jeff Paduan. "I think this works well here because of the unique partnership between the students, laboratory researchers, and our faculty."

For the first time ever, TechCon organizers opened the event to commercial industry experts and academic partners that had been invited on campus to broaden its community of interest.

"I'm really excited with what is happening with robotics, with CRUSER, and with the United States Navy. You can't look around the world today and not see that it's going to change very, very fast," said Buettner. "And as the world changes, we need folks like you to be here, to be part of the discussion, and to help us make sure that the tradition is a solid foundation that helps us build forward, rather than an anchor that holds us in the past."

During the two-day event, more than 25 research topics were briefed to the audience, both on campus and via live stream to CRUSER community. From quantifying values of unmanned systems to lightweight solar technologies, logistical sustainment via unmanned systems to rapid prototyping, university students and faculty showcased their innovative ideas to the campus community and beyond.

"Autonomy, including robotics, is pretty much going to change everything we do as a society," added Buettner.

Created in 2011 under the direction of the Secretary of the Navy, CRUSER provides a collaborative environment for the advancement of educational and research endeavors in unmanned systems and robotics across the Navy and Marine Corps enterprise.
